Everything You Should Know About Grading Around Your House!

Good grading is simple: guide water away from your home. Done right, it protects your foundation, yard, and walkways. Here’s a clear guide to get it right.

What Is Grading?

Grading is the slope of the ground. Around a house, the ground should gently tilt away so rain doesn’t sit near the foundation.

1. The Goal Slope

Aim for a drop of about 6 inches over the first 10 feet from your home. Keep soil below your siding and avoid creating a lip that traps water.

2. Soil Basics: Fill vs. Topsoil

Use fill dirt to build a shape because it packs tight. Add a thin layer of topsoil on top for grass or plants. Compact in thin layers so the grade doesn’t settle later.

3. Directing Water Safely

  • Swales: Shallow, grassy ditches that carry water across the yard.
  • Gravel trenches: A narrow trench with gravel and a pipe can move water to a safe spot.
  • Hard surfaces: Patios and paths should slope slightly away from the house.

4. Help Your Gutters Help You

Add splash blocks or extend downspouts 4–6 feet from the foundation. Clean gutters often so water doesn’t spill next to the house.

5. Signs You Need Regrading

Puddles that linger, mulch washing away, damp walls in the basement, or soil pulling away from the foundation are all warning signs.

6. Planting and Erosion Control

Grass roots hold soil in place. On steeper spots, use erosion fabric under the seed. Avoid bare dirt; it washes away fast in a storm.

7. DIY or Call a Pro?

Small touch-ups are fine for many homeowners. But full regrading near a foundation calls for careful measuring and compaction. A civil contractor brings tools, knows local rules, and makes sure water ends up where it should—away from you and your neighbors.

8. Care After the Work

Water the new seed lightly, watch the first few rains, and add soil if tiny low spots appear. Keep the area tidy so leaves don’t block water paths.

Grading is your first defense against water problems. With the right slope, materials, and simple care, your home stays dry and strong. We can design and finish the grade so you have peace of mind in every storm.
