A cracked driveway, uneven walkway or damaged concrete patio can quickly make a property look worn. The first question is usually whether the surface can be repaired or whether replacing the entire section makes more sense. The answer depends on more than appearance. The age of the concrete, depth of the damage, drainage conditions and structural stability all matter.
1. Look at how deep the damage goes
Small surface cracks, minor chips and limited areas of wear can often be repaired when the concrete underneath remains stable. Filling cracks or resurfacing damaged areas may restore appearance and help prevent moisture from entering. However, wide cracks, deep breaks or sections that have shifted significantly may point to problems below the surface. When the base has failed, a cosmetic repair may only provide temporary improvement.
2. Check whether the concrete is still level
Uneven slabs can create drainage problems and become a tripping hazard around sidewalks, patios and driveways. Before repairing or replacing concrete, identify where water goes during heavy rain. Fixing the drainage issue first helps protect the new work and reduces the chance that the same damage will return.
5. Think about age and future use
Older concrete that has already been repaired several times may continue developing problems even after another patch. Replacement may make more sense when the slab is nearing the end of its useful life or when the area will soon carry heavier loads. For example, converting a light-use patio area into vehicle parking may require a different slab thickness and base preparation. The solution should match how the space will actually be used.

Replacement becomes more practical when structural damage, widespread cracking or repeated settlement is involved.
